From Publishers WeeklyStarred Review. Though it may not yet have affected the value of 30 seconds of Super Bowl advertising, PR insider Scott argues that understanding the growing irrelevance of marketing’s “old rules” is vital to thriving in the new media jungle. Already apparent in newspapers and magazines (with sharp downturns in circulation and ads), radio (on the losing end of the iPod revolution) and direct mail (digitally replaced by spam), the imminent fall of traditional mass (more…)
I am giving free training and mentoring to folks who are struggling with getting traffic to their sites, here’s why.
Although very motivated at the time I have unpleasant memories of designing and setting up my first web presence back in 2000. Everyone who embarks upon the challenge of designing a web site should have someone to help. Designing your first web presence can seem complicated if you are inexperienced.
Areas like understanding the importance of back links and keywords, how they manipulate search engine page rankings and page authority, and the connection between these and visitor volumes are complex and consistently badly presented by the majority of seo consultants on the internet. I am always meeting people who want to build a business or build a presence on the net so I am going to do something about it.
After many years of working on the net, seeking out, learning and practising approach to build successful web presences by driving substantial volumes of surfers to them. I suddenly discovered I wanted to teach.
I have been preparing for this for about twelve months now and whenever I have had some spare time I have been creating my teaching material. Every one who is starting out or already establishing a presence on the web wants fast results, I’m no different and therefore whenever I have discovered excellent content and tools that work I am going to route my students at these rather than try and reinvent the wheel.
Everything I have tried and tested that has delivered good or excellent results will be incorporated in my educational material and where there are gaps I have filled them in. Obviously along the way I have created some techniques, tools and methods of my own that I regularly use which I will be including in the education.

Obviously not all of us can work remotely as many types of employment require individuals to go to their office or travel to undertake their work face to face. But for those of us have the chance to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and present some practical advice by writing and publishing it on the web with the sole objective of providing useful advice for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.
I must tell you you that there are groups of so called ’experts’ on the web who will try and make you purchase guides for large sums of money, take my word for it you don’t need to do this.
I am fortunate to be able to work anywhere I choose and just about everybody who asks me what I do for a living wants to get an idea of how I am able to work remotely. Don’t misinterpret me I am still developing the science of remote working as everyday I discover people on the Internet who tell me about new approaches and I am continually uncovering new technologies and methods that make my life simpler and improve my productivity.
Throughout the past 7 years I have slowly but surely adapted my working practices to enable me to do the majority of my work remotely with a mixture of online tools and unfaltering self management. One late night whilst searching the Internet I unearthed Quickbooks online and this made me aware of what just might be possible. My discovery of ’cloud’ based ‘on demand’small business accounting software was a life changing event for me and the launch pad of my ‘remote working history.
I want to mention up front that productively working remotely is as much about the tools as it is about self discipline. Working remotely also means informing your co-workers, managers and customers as to what they can expect and how they will keep in touch with you.
In ‘Remote Working Part 2 – Tips on self management’ I discuss how to focus.
