Blogging to the Bank – How to Generate Cash Online Writing About What You Love

Posted on July 20th, 2009 in Uncategorized by admin

Thousands of individuals are getting on the Internet to make their own blogs. These blogs can cover a virtually infinite number of subjects – from golf to recipes, from science to candle making, and everything in between. We can see that the Internet has surely made it possible for anyone to share their thoughts with the entire world.

Even though blogging is a lot fun (and very cathartic in many cases), a select few are creating blogs to actually make a healthy income from home. Armed with nothing but a computer, an Internet connection, and a bit of initiative, these individuals are blogging for dollars. Just how are they managing to do this while thousands upon thousands of bloggers out there are not making a dime?

As a general overview, making an income from blogging requires three vital components:

Content for Visitors

Every blog requires a good amount content. Without any interesting content, visitors just won’t stay on your blog to hear what you have to say. On the Internet, content is the king. To begin, brainstorm what you would like to be blogging about. Can’t get enough rap music? Start a blog that discusses your favorite artists and their latest album releases. As you can see, blogs can be about anything under the sun, and if you create one about something you enjoy, chances are it will not even feel like work in the slightest!

While making your content, one thing to remember is not to worry too much about perfect grammar. In most cases best to forgo more formal language and insteadwrite in a more conversational style. Not only is this easier for the visitor to read and understand, but it will also give your blog a bit of your own personality. Just write as if you were talking to a good friend in your living room. Even if you don’t consider yourself a writer, you’ll discover that the words flow quite easily with this method.

As for blogging tools, Google’s Blogger or the venerable Wordpress are good options.

Generating Traffic

The second component of the blogging formula is traffic – getting visitors to locate and read the lovely content you’ve created in part one. There are basically two ways to get traffic to your blog, and each has its pros and cons. Let’s look at both of these methods in turn:

Paid Traffic

This is generally done through advertising, such as banner advertising or pay-per-click. If you’ve got more money than time, this is a very good way to get traffic to your blog in a really short period of time. You can set yourself up with a Google Adwords account and start bidding on keywords that relate to your blog’s subject. To help you think up keywords, you can use Google’s popular free keyword tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal). To begin, try to look for keywords that are “long tail” – keywords that are being searched for, but have relatively less competition. These are generally 3-5 word phrases rather than phrases of one or two keywords. This will keep your cost per click low as you test the feasibility of your new blog. While paid advertising can offer traffic in a hurry, it is, of course, going to cost you some dough.

Free Traffic

The second variation is to receive free traffic. This method is not going to really cost you anything dollar wise, but it is a lot more time consuming than a paid traffic method. If you’re short on dough, learning how to get free traffic to your blog is an important skill.

Making Money

As soon as you’ve got traffic coming to read your blog, the last task is to monetize that traffic. By far the easiest way to accomplish this is by becoming an affiliate for a pre-existing product. Websites such as Commission Junction, Linkshare, and Clickbank make it easy to talk about other people’s products and pocket some cash every time you refer a sale. As soon as you sign up for an account, you will have access to a wealth of products and services that you could be promoting on your blog.
